Chapter 4_2, Section b: “Sweet Vapor,” Beatrice, Pangisnaua, Mater Dolorosa & the Haustafel

In the opening movement of "Rappaccini’s Daughter," Hawthorne establishes the fatal paradox of Beatrice’s "poison-nourished body" coexisting with an innocent, uncorrupted soul.23,24 While her joyful submission ("And gladly will I undertake it") structurally mimics the Dantean25 lieto, it ultimately operationalizes her lethal domestic imprisonment. By offering her devoted last breath in a posture mirroring both the Mater Dolorosa and the Philippine devotional ethos of huling hininga, Beatrice surrenders to a self-locking contrapasso—a self-sealing trap where Holy forbearance enforces permanent paralysis.26,27,28
Giovanni, from his window perspective, overhears Beatrice’s devotion to her holy duty to Rappiccine’s inverted Eden: “It shall be Beatrice’s task… thou shalt reward [Beatrice] with thy kisses and perfumed breath, which to her is a breath of life.”29 Beatrice is setting up an expectation of reciprocity.30 Martin Luther popularized and categorized these household duty lists in his 1529 Small Catechism, establishing an ordered domestic hierarchy intended to balance paternal/spousal authority with reciprocal spiritual responsibility.31 When established as biblical household codes, these passages—as comparative literary, theological, and legal diagnoses demonstrate—have been systematically perverted into mechanisms of asymmetrical domestic entrapment32 (contrapasso). The Pauline household tables (Haustafeln) outline reciprocal domestic duties: wives are commanded to submit to their husbands as unto the Lord (subditae sint), while husbands are commanded to exercise self-sacrificial, Christ-like love ("even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it")33,34,35.
In "Rappaccini's Daughter," the theological command of paternal/marital headship and submission is distorted into Rappaccini’s autocratic control and Giovanni's demands—instead of receiving Christ-like protective self-sacrifice ("gave himself for it"), she receives36,37 lethal containment and an untested, self-serving lover. Rappaccini perverts the paternal and domestic Haustafel: instead of nurturing life through self-sacrificial love, he subjects Beatrice to a toxic, artificial Eden.37 Giovanni also perverts the marital Haustafel: instead of offering protective, faithful self-sacrifice, he acts as an untested, callow spectator whose superficial fascination views Beatrice through aesthetic voyeurism.38,39 When tested, he rejects mutual suffering, demands her conformity to his self-preservation, and hands her the lethal antidote—sacrificing her life rather than giving himself for her.40,41,42
In the Philippine domestic-legal matrix (EO 209 and the Ilaw ng Tahanan / Mater Dolorosa paradigms), the Haustafel duty of female submission and endurance (huling hininga) is culturally and legally codified, while the husband's reciprocal obligation is left without systemic enforcement or legal exit for the wife. The Haustafel thus transforms into an instrument of structural contrapasso—a domestic code that locks the woman into sanctified, inescapable containment.34,35
Through the diagnostic lens of the JROspace ABCDE framework, the trajectory from Rappaccini’s Paduan enclosure to the contemporary Philippine domestic matrix exposes a unified architecture of unaccountable power. In both arenas, absolute authority establishes its domain through a totalizing Identity Claim (Stage A), demanding Beatrice’s joyful submission to an artificial Eden while prescribing the Ilaw ng Tahanan as an identity founded on silent endurance. Paternal, marital, and pastoral obligations are systematically rejected (Stage B) in favor of an asymmetrical burden where the male authorities—whether Dr. Rappaccini behind his protective mask, Giovanni testing his fatal antidote, or the civil-religious patriarch—evade reciprocal self-sacrifice.37 By substituting context (Stage C) to reframe domestic toxicity as redemptive sanctification and deflecting empirical harm (Stage D) through aesthetic voyeurism or pastoral mediation, the system preserves its dogmatic insulation.38 The inevitable result is a self-sealing Narrative Escapism (Stage E) operating as modern contrapasso: just as Beatrice’s vital breath (pangisnaua) is consumed within her father’s lethal garden, the modern Filipina’s sacrificial huling hininga is codified into permanent, indissoluble containment under the Family Code—transforming the domestic sanctuary into an inescapable altar of sanctified suffering.39
